Leatherman Sheath Reviews

Many of us carry our Leatherman Multitools in sheaths to both protect the Tool and as a practical way to attach it to our self and our gear. That said, it is hard to know what the best option for a Leatherman Sheath is. At Leatherman Sheath reviews, we compare the classic Leatherman Sheath varieties to the newer Maxpedition Single Sheath. We compare 4 sheaths that are similar in build and shape. The largest differentiator is the craftsmanship of each Leatherman Sheath and the quality of the materials used.

Premium Leather Sheath 3

For those who have the Premium Leather Leatherman Sheath 3 that comes with the Charge series, you already know that that it is Bulky and made of very stiff leather that will protect the Tool from scratches and also look very nice on a leather belt. One great thing about the Premium Leather Leatherman Sheath 3 is that it allows you to sheath the tool in the open position (upside down) and then close the flap with a push button. This sheath can also be worn horizontally on belts up to 2 in (5 cm) or vertically on a 1.5 in (4cm belt). Ultimately we find that the Premium Leather Sheath from Leatherman is a bit too hard in terms of material and that it is lacking in attachment options. That said, this sheath will look good with a pair of jeans and definitely has a customer in mind.

Leatherman Nylon Standard Sheath 1

Moving away from leather, the Nylon Standard Leatherman Sheath 1 that comes with the Skeletool is made of a quality Nylon that has a light feel and fits well around a full size Multitool. As you might imagine, this sheath does a good job of protecting the Tool from scratches, though its thinness may be surprising to some. The good news is that this thin build allows you to easily fit the sheath in a pant pocket. This sheath can be worn horizontally with its big loop on a 2.5 in (6 cm) belt or vertically on a 2 in (5 cm) belt. This Leatherman sheath closes via Velcro. Overall, we find that the Nylon Sheath is a fair compromise when it comes to the protection of a Multitool. Unfortunately the Nylon Standart Leatherman Sheath 1 cannot be attached to Molle and is not all that well-crafted.

Molle Sheath from Leatherman

The Molle Sheath from Leatherman is essentially a larger nylon Leatherman sheath with a larger flap and more of a squared shape. This allows the Molle Sheath a bit more in terms of flexibility and attachment options. The Molle Sheath from Leatherman can be attached to Molle Gear (Bags, Pants, Vests) and it can also be worn on belts horizontally up to 3.5 in (8.5 cm) or vertically at 1.5 in (4 cm). Just like the Nylon Standard Sheath 1, this sheath closes with Velcro. The Molle Leatherman Sheath from Leatherman is not the sturdiest sheath that we have ever seen – due to the ballistic nylon, it is not as good as the Maxpedition Single Sheath – but we give it points for the wide array of attachment options and overall flexibility.

Maxpedition Single Sheath

Finally, the Maxpedition Single Leatherman Sheath is made of a very good quality ballistic nylon which offers your multitool a great deal of protection from scratches. This Leatherman Sheath is very strong in build quality and can withstand quite a bit of abuse. The Maxpedition Single Leatherman Sheath can be attached to Molle Gear (Pants, Bags, Vests) and also to a belt 2 in (5 cm) horizontal or vertical. Like the others, this sheath is Velcro fastened. The Maxpedition Single Leatherman Sheath has great Molle compatible and is in terms of quality, the sturdiest sheath we have come across. The 1000 denier ballistic nylon is bulky and we need to say that this sheath lacks when it comes to belt compatibility since it will not fit on larger belts.

Nylon Sheath for Leatherman Surge

I have the molle types, the leather sheaths and this is my favorite. It is easiest to keep sideways and in the front of my belt comparing to other Leatherman Sheath products made for Surge, that I have used. My Leatherman Surge sits secure in this one. I feel it is the less bulky and stays in place the best. If you use it a lot, the velcro closing will start to wear out eventually, but you can either fix it, put a snap closure on it later if need be, or just buy a couple of these sheaths.
